VISTA Works
Dr. Maness and the VISTA team were preparing for the annual Earth Day event at Black Bayou, located in Monroe, LA. We wanted to bring awareness about microplastics by creating flyers for any passersby.
For our first flyer, we wanted to engage our younger audience with a short comic about plastics, drawn in a simple, cartoonish style. In the comic, the flyer provides general information about plastics and how they affect the environment. It also encourages our audience to throw away their trash and recycle any items that can be reused in the future.
On the back of the flyer, we also created an activity page where our audience picks out what’s different between those two images. We wanted to encourage them to use plastic alternatives and to throw away litter that can harm the environment.
Beginning in early January, Dr. Maness asked me to create a second flyer for any college-level students who are interested in learning about microplastics. This flyer talks about how microplastics can potentially affect marine life in the Gulf through biomagnification. Some statistics to support the claim include the amount of prey consumed per day at each trophic level, the amount of microplastics consumed per individual per day, and the types of microdebris found on beaches.
